IBM announced that it is going to open its first solar powered Data Center in Bangalore India. This will use first solar-power array designed by IBM specifically to run high-voltage data centers, integrating AC- and DC-based servers, water-cooled computing systems and related electronics, as reported in PRNewswire. This is spread over 6000 SQFT roof top overing IBM india's software lab in Bangalore. It is reported to have ability to supply 50 KW electricity for 1650 hours each year. Other Indian IT companies like Infosys WIpro etc are already using Wind Energy for other uses, but we do not have reports of these being used for data centers.
High-voltage, DC computer servers and water-cooling systems are beginning to replace traditional, AC-powered servers and air-conditioning units in data centers. In emerging countries like India where GRID connectivity is often unreliable, diesel generators are expensive and polluting. This could provide a new option for companies running massive data centers.
